Thes Are All a few of the games ive played over the years that are Turn based Strategy.
But for this case i would say that GLADIUS isnt the first strategy but the first to try warhammer 40k in a 4x Civilization Style setting but by no means the first strategy set in the 40k universe.
O and to the OP DAWN OF WAR was a RTS series not a turnbased but still a great Game.
But with Total War you could create more than one army to take plots on the 'over map', and you only had what troops you brought. With Dark Crusade and Soulstorm you only had your hero and every battle you started, was a regular skirmish match.
(the MSDOS one) was the most turn based of all in the Series of PC Adaptions) (i still have Space Crusade (made by MB by the way and deployed with Citadel Figurines, not made by GW itself) and its Expansions somewhere here in my Bulk of TT games :) )
So yeah, it's always been a major wallet hit.
Let's just say that $200 wouldn't get you a squad let alone two.
Infantry squads are 30-60$
Vehicles 40-80$(depending on size it seems)
Starter kits for factions are around 100$ and you get a few squads, a hero, maybe a small vehicle
starter kits with rules and all are like 200$ but you get two small forces
Its expensive but not that terrible if you compare it to a hobby like cars lol.
So it actually became cheaper over the last 30 years, nice to know. But still with 'the plague' and all, getting back into it would seem like a waste, because one would still need someone to play it with, nuff' said.
Sadly no :( I think you're just misremembering the prices. In 1998, the year I started, the starter box for 40k set you back 60€ (converted from local currency, but it should be in the same ballpark in other parts of the world). One of the start collecting boxes for a faction was also 60€, and for space marines, that would give you 10 Tactical marines, 5 terminators, a landspeeder and 3 bikes, plus some ruins. Then there were the bigger mail order boxes, which came with a lot more, and sometimes a codex. They would vary a bit in price.
