Worth it in 2021? (Replayability and Competent AI?)

I love Warhammer 40k (tabletop included) and I'm looking for a decent strategy game that isn't Dawn of War. I heard this game was a little rough around the edges at release but has improved since then and gotten a few good DLCs under its belt that add in more factions and gameplay elements.

My one question is, how is the replay value? Especially against the AI. Are they smart enough to provide unique challenges and obstacles every single match or do they bee-line the same static build and unit order based on their faction every single time?

Because I've watched videos and taken a peek at the tech tree. Seems like there's a bunch of different routes you can take for each faction as far as strategy and army building goes. It would be a shame if the AI didn't utilize it at least somewhat as good as the player.

Thanks in advance. Figured if I was gonna get this game it might as well be while its on sale with all of the currently released DLC.

No, the game is not worth playing in 2020. The cost of the time machine alone to access 2020 again is excessive. 2021 though, the game is still quite great. :)
The AI is far from the skills of a human player and relies on unit spam, but as the economic mechanics are simpler compared to games like Civ6, it doesn't fail as hard as in other 4X games and is still a decent enough challenge.
Keep in mind it's basically nothing like Dawn of War, though, apart from the setting. It's closer to Fantasy General with base building or Civ6 with actually good combat, but simplified everything else.

This game was great at release. Then I remember some a.i. genius helped them and a patch made it a very tough opponent. I haven’t played it recently but with all these expansions I’d imagine it’s awesome I’m tempted back.
