Worth it in 2021? (Replayability and Competent AI?)
I love Warhammer 40k (tabletop included) and I'm looking for a decent strategy game that isn't Dawn of War. I heard this game was a little rough around the edges at release but has improved since then and gotten a few good DLCs under its belt that add in more factions and gameplay elements.

My one question is, how is the replay value? Especially against the AI. Are they smart enough to provide unique challenges and obstacles every single match or do they bee-line the same static build and unit order based on their faction every single time?

Because I've watched videos and taken a peek at the tech tree. Seems like there's a bunch of different routes you can take for each faction as far as strategy and army building goes. It would be a shame if the AI didn't utilize it at least somewhat as good as the player.

Thanks in advance. Figured if I was gonna get this game it might as well be while its on sale with all of the currently released DLC.

The AI is far from the skills of a human player and relies on unit spam, but as the economic mechanics are simpler compared to games like Civ6, it doesn't fail as hard as in other 4X games and is still a decent enough challenge.
Keep in mind it's basically nothing like Dawn of War, though, apart from the setting. It's closer to Fantasy General with base building or Civ6 with actually good combat, but simplified everything else.

Thanks for the correction. Time becomes warped after spending so much time in quarantine.

And sounds good enough. Been watching some gameplay against the AI.

And oh I know I expected as much being as its a 4X game. As far as combat being the main focus of the game, I wouldn't expect anything else in a game set in the 40k universe lol

Yeah it's worth it, it also has workshop support so you got it easy and fast with access to mods. I'd recommend taking a look there because there's some real cool flavor stuff in there, like the one that voices units more and gives voice-acting to the missions which is super cool.

Id echo what Xavier says the ai gives a good challenge on the higher levels and its just a really enjoyable game to play and one of the best tactics games ive played for a long while with enough depth and factions to keep you playing time and time again.

Bought it yesterday. Been having a blast :steamhappy: Ultramarines in particular.

Simpler than those crazy CIV games, yet still complex enough to satisfy decent strategy game. c:

There is no diplomacy in 40k! You're either with us, or against us: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!

If they aren't already with you, they must be an enemy!

I have total warhammer 1 and 2 and all the dlc i think for both and yet i find this game always brings me back much more than either of those,i think its because its a bit like chess and trying to manouvere your pieces into position a few moves ahead to gain the advantage, the fact there are so many amazing mods also in the workshop gives it a long life also.

The best mod by far in my view is toomanyvoices as someone else mentioned in this thread and its just been updated to voice the quests and things also now its totally superb and brings this game to a whole new level atmosphere wise.

I love Total Warhammer (Dwarves especially) but its a damn shame there isn't a 40k version. That would be f***ing awesome.

And I installed Too Many Voices as soon as I got the game after watching videos. Its almost like it was meant to be a part of the Vanilla experience.

Just imagine the animations in a TW40k. Especially things like Assault Terminators and Dark Eldar Talos.

Given that I was a lot more invested in fantasy than on 40k, I'd much rather see Slitherine make a fantasy version of Gladius. I know that Total War: Warhammer exists, but I am not a fan of RTS combat (though I've logged more hours on it than any other game!).

While on the topic of 40k games can anyone else agree that we're severely lacking in the First Person/Third Person purging department? Like there's only a handful.

I mean I know we have Spacehulk Deathwing (I'm one of the few who actually enjoy that game solo) and Space Marine, as well as Darktide which is on the way. There's also Fire Warrior but who the f*** wants to play as a Tau?
