Tau lack firepower?
I guess I could be off base here, because most of my video game exposure to Tau is in the Dawn of War games where just their basic Fire Warrior units have ridiculous face melting fire power, but from what I know of the lore the Tau guns seem to be pretty underwhelming in the game so far?

Also I seem to be spawning completely surrounded by kastellan robots, which may be part of it lol. And I'm not expecting Fire Warriors to one-shot neutrals or anything, but so far it seems their play is almost zerg-like, swarming the enemy with drones and super weak converted auxillaries. It's just a little wierd watching pulse rifles hopelessly plink off of anything even lightly armored.

It might be more interesting (and lore friendly) to have the Fire Warrior optimal range be at 2, with weaker shots on adjacent foes.

They get a lot of firepower in the middle and late game tech. Also you need to buff your fire warriors with units like drones or heroes. At the beginning you should play very carefully and defensive and use their overwatch and marker abilities. For early game you should research drones which are very helpful to protect your fragile fire warriors.

The kastellan robots thing is just really bad map generation luck, if you get a really rancid start you don't like don't feel too bad about just starting a fresh game, if I had a dollar for every time I got overwhelmed by a swarm of enslavers at the start of the game...
Well I'd have like 5 dollars.

The Tau weapons are actually pretty strong, each individual weapon in a team of Fire Warriors does a lot more than a Las Gun, I'd say it's comparible to the Gauss Rifles almost, it'll out-dps a lasgun even without the rapidfire (don't quote me on that I didn't math it, just a feeling).
The thing that keeps it from really shining is that the Fire Team squads are small, and they're squishy.
The real POWER of the Tau comes in when you team up Fire Teams (or pathfinders) with BATTLESUITS, using the infantry's markerlight abilities to light up targets, reducing ranged DR and increasing damage taken, then have your battlesuits swoop in and rain hot-plasma-death all over them (after sweeping out any overwatches with expendable drones).
Coupled with hammerheads for long range suppressive fire the Tau are relentless.

Also something I've noticed playing Tau that I haven't seen anyone mention: Builder Drones
Their repair ability is INCREDIBLY powerful, they can repair any unit (might be a bug but ssshh) so having a bunch of Builder Drones bringing up the rear to heal battlesuits and vehicles and clear out wireweed is a great strategy to keep all those expensive mechs and hover tanks in the field even when they're far from home.

Fire Warriors need support from Cadre Fireblades, Ethereals and pathfinders.
If you managed to get a good position with this unit composition you can kill a lot and then you have your battlesuits and tanks to go in the offense.

If you have 2 HAmmerheads, a fireblade and a ethereal behind them and firewarriors on the sides + 2-3 crisis suit teams for fast respond and flexibility you can litteraly melt a city......

You have a lot of synergy effects as a tau player and your army is only really strong if you use this potential.

The robots are actually relatively easy for Tau to fight if you make one unit mark them and take away all their defence. I'd say Tau have the easiest start to the game having no trouble with wildlife and easily producing more units with the ability to claim half the wildlife as their own.

I dont know what you mean, i just want to give a good example of a good working tau army composition.
