Could be resources, could be differing opinions on an Exterminatus, could be the fact that the SM worship a mummy, there are dozens of reasons for the two to fight.

Unlikely but entirely possible. A lot of chapters are borderline and would go to war with the IG for reasons of their own. Whether they win or lose would be meticulously scrubbed from the imperial command and any officer at risk executed

Also it's out of character for marines to "4x" a world. They come in, strike the winning blow, and the guard do the 'conquering'

That is definitely true. Maybe they'll have good reasons to.. protecting some mechanicum digging site or something

The lore is an issue. Why are they all stuck on a planet without reinforcement, ect. We shall have to see the story.Im not sure making these seperate was wise rather than just adding TAU,ect.

In an ideal world it would be a sector with mulitple planets and space battles but budget.

And why do they need to be enemies? IG and SMs act independently from each other. They are allies but they have their own command structure. Besides it allows devs to add more units for numerous factions instead of cramming everything into single one OP faction.

happened in dark crusade, the different forces in the imperium do find themselves at odds with each other from time to time.

*facepalm* I hoped no one would mention that heresy...

Dark Crusade was awesome at being what it was trying to be, even if I spent the whole time thinking "Gah why can't someone make a turn-based 40K?" Also don't forget the Dawn of War series created a lot of new fans and confirmed in a big way for the first time since Final Liberation and Chaos Gate that 40K was a viable IP.

The OP is just a straight-up troll however, either that or they don't know anything about Slitherine (or 40K for that matter). Now the question of why the SM would be 4X'ing around the galaxy is a better one, I'll give you that; but even if the SM and IG were all in one faction, the SM would hardly be absent from a world perpetually at war (if it's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥' war anyway). I suppose it's all about Slitherine's method of presentation at the end of the day, and I'm not going to cry and whine about facts I don't yet have.

just because SM and AM/IG are in the same game doesnt mean they are fighting each other. unless you have access to some unreleased footage showing them fighing, i think you have jumped the gun with the "do you know anything about 40k" comment. perhaps you have heard the saying about what it makes you if you assume something.

Wow its like new and stuff and not that the games doesn’t care which side fights who like in all the other warhammer rts games
Arch Nov 25, 2017 @ 3:42pm
kingmarkie so you mean there will be 4 factions total in the game except 2 of them can't fight each other?

It makes sense if its like the badab war and they were misled to fight one another but still, meh.
I think they made a really bad choice of having both guard and marines in a game that has total 4 factions
Fortunado Nov 25, 2017 @ 4:14pm
the space marines pretty much 4x'ed every one of their home worlds. the only X that might be questionable is eXploiting the resources, which is usually done by mechanicum, servitors, and humans. If this is not depicted then it shouldn't be too hard to use your imagination if you are already accepting everything else in the 40k universe at face value.

just pointed out that the OP jumped to a conclusion and pooped all over the game even though virtually nothing is known about it. they likely can fight each other. in DoW 1 through 3 i played a many a game sm vs sm, necron vs necron etc. i've seen it in table top as well. if OP can accept everything else 40k but this is somehow a deal breaker, then he probably should just stick to the books and not play any of the games.

I'm already seeing questionable design decisions.
4 factions in a tbs 4x game is far too few, whatever you do.
2 of them being the same side is also questionable since it forces you to twist around the plot in ways you could have avoided if you were smarter (unless it's really very well crafted and will surprise me).
1 of them not even being the kind to ever 'take a planet' is also... marines kill the enemy on the planet, they don't conquer it and mine it to build more of whatever, 40k just doesn't work that way.
Waiting to see what they do but I do reckon this'll be a disapointment
