How to escape grapple?

What exactly do you need to do when you are grappled by a zombie in one of arena stages? Icons with a fist and sometimes a foot appear with a left or right arrow. Do I press left and right or just click like a madman? Or do I need to do some blocking as well? It is possible that this was explained somewhere and I just didn't notice...

Tap the movement key in the direction of the icon above the zombie, or away from where you're being grabbed. For example, you get grabbed from the left, the icon will point to the right, spam D

Thanks, for the answer. I just tried it and got free a lot quicker. I have one more question if you don't mind. What do those fist and feet icons are supposed to mean during the grapple?

the fist indicates where the attack is coming from, and the foot is you breaking away; the direction you need to be pressing.
