I don't like the combat.
What is the best combat system for RPGs?

For RPG games there is always that flaw, boss too hard?... go grind. Its why I get bored in games like borderlands. SNES = PSX was the great PRG era. I get that these games are to be like an episode of south park.

FBW is a 4ish man party system. Artifacts are like weapons and armor, but very generic. Also easy since combat does not seem to rely on level. Grid system is more about placement, and timefarts. You can change you superhero class, and in the end get all classes. Its major flaw is that it just takes sooo long to win.

Stick of Truth. Had weapons and armor. Very easy, you can use an item and attack each turn, which is a huge flaw, but compensated for 2 man party system. 4 different classes, but moves all seem the same. I feel if you did a 3 man party, and could customize the party, it would be more fun.

I feel the Chrono Trigger battle system would work in South Park games with the combos. Have the real time aspect, where all teammates can attack but use their turn together for a move. Please note I hate chrono cross combat. Very bland.

Zelda: this is probably the best way to do a 1 man RPG. You dont really level up, just gear and heart up.

Tales of XXXXX . These titles are still coming out for PC. This combat system would also work, and is very fun. Its a street fighter match in real time.

Final Fantasy. Similar to stick of truth, but its more about the gear and the pre setup of the ENTIRE PARTY. My favourite Final Fantasys were 6 & 7. In 6, each hero had their own special ability, like a ninja could throw items from the inventory, the thief can steal. There was an old man that learned spell from monsters to use as his own. Make the best weapons were hard to get, like their own quest to get em. Also there is hidden heros, like a mimic and yeti. ff7 master material is fun.

Breath of Fire. I liked in bof3 where you collect dragon stones, and combine up to 3 of them to create different dragon forms. You can transform into a dragon for X amount turns. etc etc.

Legend of legaia. I liked the combat in this, but also got stale near the end of the game.

Yeah the south park games have a very simplistic design, but it's pretty much a deliberate choice on the part of the developers. I mean the games are not meant to be taken seriously, and it pokes fun at a lot of rpg tropes used by some of the games you mentioned. If you want a modern rpg where you customize your party and have to use the abilities of your team mates to compliment one another you should check out Divinity Original Sin 2.

The SNES-X-PSX era (esp the PSX era) has quite a number of Grid combat based games, many being RPG'S. Just because you didn't like or play them doesn't make them not exist during the so called golden age of RPG's. The biggest problem with all the systems is design. Weapons and Armor, are generally very generic especially during the SNES-PSX era.

Lunar 2 comes to mind. It was almost impossible to beat the last boss without Hiro's level 50 ability, which you had to grind like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for.

The rpg systems are in meta and as such are simplistic because the kids made up the games rules.
