If you are really committed to the idea of this limitation, perhaps you could find a compromise in the form of Spell Energy being an empowerment that makes the spell you've crafted stronger, and once it's used up, you don't lose the spell, but it instead drops down to a more basic level.
I want to be more of a manipulator of arcane energies and less of a gardener and logistics manager (though to be clear, I DO like the addition of farming, just not the idea of my magic being limited by consumable "stuff" instead of energy)
Yes I agree this is what drives many like me away from dark and light for example because they rely on cusomption i think the majority from my experience do not enjoy consumables,. this is why i do not like relying on alchemy in video games or games with scrolls,. I despise them I prefer to have real natural power, I do not think it is fair that a melee based gets stamina in these kinds of games and magic gets to loose spells seriously there has to be a better way.,
for example
you could have 1 guy pour all his points into extract to get like more resources, have longer range and have a increased gathering rate
you could have someone else focus on aggressive spells like fireball to create maybe not one but 2 or 3 fireballs with one spell like a meteor shower? have increased damage and splash damage and such
it would make teamwork even smoother than it is already because i feel like all that more players in a party do is learning stuff from the knowledge tree, and all of them gather more resources together instead of having a dedicated person do that at an increased rate and pve right now for me atleast (because im not sure if there's any better way) is to simply cheese mobs by either flying on my broom just inside their aggro range and spamming fireballs or something. if you could make pvp or pve more streamlined with actual tactics that would be amazing, like have one person spend points on knockback and others spend points in increased damage and such
TL;DR
having a skilltree type of spell system would streamline gameplay, make houses more useful and would give more options for different tactics
