Where should I place my refuge?
I am doing storyline. Currently I have to conquer Dun Taruo, and hold it for 30 days. And btw I am viking who is hated by all christian kingdoms. I am not sure where should I put my refuge. I heard you can sell items there, so maybe in south brittain, where I raid monasteries? Or maybe I should place it in friendly territory, in Northymbre? Or near Dun Taruo?
Or maybe storyline will lead me somewhere else later?

I think the best location is :

1) Near a place where you can find the infantry you like using the best, so that your trainer can whip the tier I and II recruits into tier III professionals.
2) On the coast, so that you have a harbor
3) Near a good place for preying on outlaws or monasteries, whichever floats your boat
4) Near wherever you intend to start your kingdom, for early reinforcements, but not too near, so you have a larger footprint
5) centrally located

For me, this ends being the Southern coast of England, as I prefer Saxon spearmen for my shield wall, and like preying on elite vikings. It's also close to Wales, where I usually start my kingdom, as they are the most vulnerable to my style of play.

Your mileage may, of course, vary.

Thanks.
Somewhere in southern England sounds good, but I prefer norse troops, and it's not very close to Northymbre/Norwegia/Denmark.

🤔
But it isn't very far either so I guess it isn't a big problem.

I tend to pick the east shore of the river opposite Bebbanburh. My North Sea fleet is based in / near Bebbanburh, Irish Sea fleet in my refuge, and I have the shortest possible overland path to switch fleets.

Sorry for the necro, I'm just trying to place my refuge right at the northern tip of of the Highlands, right across the water from Orkney.
1. There's no port around there.
2. I have ancestral connections to there.

I'm just wondering about coasts, that little part there where I've put my refuge looks like viable coast, a little sheer, but not cliffs. Once I built my refuge the land flattened a little. I'm just trying to work out ahead of time whether I'll be able to build a port there. I don't want to sink troops and resources into it only to find out that my plan to build a port will be in vain. Can it be anywhere on the coast? Does it need to be on beach? Does that little bit look right for a port despite being surrounded by coastal cliffs?

An illustration of the location to help explain what I'm asking.

Disregard, I went to work on expanding it thinking I'd have to go back a few saves, and found I was able to build a jetty. I don't know how close you need to be to the coast to do that but I'm glad I didn't build on top of the cliff.

Imagine placing your refuge in a computer game, in a certain place because one of your ancestors was there a lot of time ago.
Also your ancestors were probably over half of the earth if you look far back enough in time.

There is an Island to the southwest of the Port of Dun Breatann, I'm going to claim it for my warband. Will be an excellent base of operations for my raiding and pillaging and establishing myself as the dominant raider in the area. Whilst being close enough to other towns for selling the loot, and near the Quarry to sell many of our victims into slavery.

Then when we are stronger, will start looking to conquer and establish my own Kingdom and control some of the major towns and ports in the area. With them all being nearby it will hopefully be easier to hold them and have enough income to use as a stepping stone for larger campaigns.

That's a good idea, placing it on an island, like placing it far away from the centre of action, means it's much less likely to be attacked.

Attacked? A refuge?

Never been attacked while resting in your refuge with just your core party?
