As for the axe... I do not remember one worth keeping, There was a bаsтагd one, and it was too slow one-handed, i.e. with a shield.
In Viking conquest, shields are a must. The enemies are going to try and nail you with a javelin even when you are in melee. At full difficulty, forgoing the shield is not for me. So whether I have a spear, sword or javelin in my right hand, the left is holding a shield, unless the enemy has no javelins. Thus, two-handers are not for me.
In Tunsberg you can get the widowmaker. All are 34 swing damage and a decent sword. i upgrade them to balanced and use them.
Otherwise i use the alban sword that you get for killing the snake if i got a strong charater that iam leveling up to the troll axe.
