How's the story to this game?
Gameplay looks like a lot of fun, but I usually need a decent story to glue a game together for me. Trailer didn't reveal anything in the way of a plot, and the description seemed iffy. Is there anything, or is this more like a Civilization style game in terms of it being a mostly generic conquor-the-world progression?

There is very little story on rails in the native game. You sort of make your own story based on your choices and interactions. Some of the mods and DLC and spin offs add more story.

There is literally NO story in native.

The story is that the Empire of Calradia more or less collapsed some time ago and then separate Kingdoms are fighting each other to reunify it. There are 5 Kingdoms, each with certain strengths and weaknesses. Your backstory is up to you; you shape the background of your character, and where they start. You choose the background of your father, and what you did in your earlier life, which in turn all affects your strengths and weaknesses in skills. Being the son/daughter of a great warrior, and working as say a smith previously will make you stronger and start out as a better warrior. If you come from a higher born background, you'll be more attuned to courtly skills and such.

You are more or less in charge of making the story though, which is pretty much the beauty of it. You can choose to swear your loyalty to a faction or you could stay a mercenary and largely independent.

However you can eventually start your own Kingdom and fight to unify Calradia under your rule! This is the final goal it seems.

So you know the ends, but the means are up to you! To say there's no story seems absurd, it's just that there isn't necessarily a linear storyline.

If you new to these games i would say dont get this game just yet because bugs are being worked on and it could stop you from playing these kind of games, so i would get Native Warband or Fire and Sword , go from there they are single play .

So are we talking Viking or native here?

I'd say go with native for sure, wait on Viking.

The new VC(vikings cont..) dlc introduce a story campaign i'm loving the story so far, but native its sandbox, you make your own story, make friends, enemies, etc, but VC has a sandbox mode too if you dont want a story

Absolutely 0 story, other than the little background knowledge you get by talking to people. You make your own story.

You're a feudal lord, kill everybody and rule the land.
