As for massacres.. lol you should stay away from the farmsteads.
I honestly dont think that the game is that bad. I am at day 107, and am still very into the game. It is very playable (besides 1 bug with a boat, but there is a solution to get past it), and much more of a enjoyable challange.. However, if you are one of those people that love to complain about stupid stuff (lack of choices in weapons and armour) then you should probably wait.
It is ok if tournaments hard because of high level bots. But I am talking about unfair weapon sets for teams. For example, when my team have spears + shield against other teams with axes/swords + shields - my team have VERY little chance to win. And when in tier 5-6 I am 1 on 1 with spear versus any jarl or konung with axe and shield - I have no chances at all (yes I know how to use spear as a polearm) - it is impossible to hit an opponent at all. I.e. you loose only because of weapon, not skill. It makes me sad. Situation may be otherwise - you have better weapon, and opponents have no chances. It makes me sad too. Because victory is too easy, no feeling of victory at all.
I agree that spear and shield is AWFUL in tournaments and if you get them your loss is very likely imminent. Though I don't get your one-on-one problem since you are unbeatable one-on-one through blocking first and striking then repeat. If you time it right you may even strike til your opponent dies without him swinging his weapon once.
My biggest problem with tournaments is when there are three teams and both of them charge you from different angles. When you get a sword or axe you have a chance but with spear.... youre t-t-t-toast. I'm okay with not winning but getting DP:d without a chance at winning bothers me. Cheap deaths(losses) are never fun. Though getting the spear in general makes the difficulty level skyrocket.
Would be nice if they made it a bit more even. Like if they removed melee spear from tournaments, only keeping the throwing spears which are pretty good in close quarters since they are shorter, way easier to handle and you can actually do damage with them without tricking your opponent to step back.
Or add shortspears.
Or add a secondary weapon.
