As a commoner, do I ever get a banner?

Like, when I become King of my own faction, do I get to choose a banner, or am I stuck with this lame checker-board pattern for the whole game?

You get to choose when you become a lord.

I don't actually know what happens if you manage to capture a castle all by yourself when not aligned with any faction - perhaps you would get the option to have a banner then, but thats not something I have ever done.

You can always just start off as a lord, by picking your father as an impovershed noble and yourself as a paige at a court in your child hood in the character creation at the beggining

If you capture a fief while independent you should also get the option to choose a banner.

In Native the white stag head on black background was my first choice and is still my favorite.

I captured a castle without being associated with anyone and it picked a banner for me. I do not approve. I'm hoping somewhere along the way I'll be able to change it. This go 'round, I'm trying to never be associated with anyone, and it would kind of suck to be forced to just to choose a banner.

You probably clicked when it came up and accidentally picked a banner. Because I started my own kingdom from scratch and obviously I didn't do so well because I only had like 5 people after the battle and the other villages were guarded and looted by lords. But I am guessing that's what happened.

For what it's worth...as soon as I created my own kingdom, I got the option to pick a banner. So if you were auto-assigned a banner, idk what to tell you. Maybe like Guy w/shades said...idk.

Some mods allow you to change your banner from the "Camp" menu. If I recall correctly, Native does not. You probably just clicked too fast when you were offered a banner.

If it REALLY bothers you, use an editor like gimp or Paint.NET to edit the banner you were assigned to one that you like. You can cut&paste from another banner, if you don't feel up to drawing one yourself.

I did that once, and so I put my profile picture on it.
