You have to capture a town or a castle. If you are not a vassal to any kingdom that should start it. If you are a vassal you should send your king a demand that you get the castle/town which you just captured. If he refuses, then you can disobey him keeping it for yourself and starting your own kingdom.

You need to have a quite well leveled character, high 'right to rule' value (c over 50) and many lords who are your friends (or in very good terms with you). Otherwise you will end into problems.

i also have some lords in my prison, how can i sell them?

You have to wait that somebody (not mentioned but maybe their king or family?) offers a sum of money for them. Then you can accept or decline (and wait for another higher offer). If you decline you lose some of your honour and there is a risk they manage to escape when you get nothing.
Play. Trust the game you're playing, it's a good game. It never failed me.

Talking to your prisoners doesn't benefit in any way. You cannot even hire them as a jester into your court :)

do you lose your existing fiefs if u disobey your lord and keep a castle?
'thinking of Christopher Colombus reading everything about America in Wiki before discovering it...
Or is that instead...

No. It is easier the more castles and towns you have before splitting with your old kingdom.

Quite a leveled character? I took my first castle at lvl 20 and it really wasn't hard. You just need a lot of men.

No I ment that starting own kingdom can be a pretty tough job. Especially if you do not have high 'right to rule' value all the other kingdoms begin to attack you. To have a strong party you need high skills especially in certain areas and to have that you need to have a high level

You mainly need trainer, leadership, wound treatment and a few others. Leadership is the only one you need to do for your own character I think. The others can be covered by companions

In order for trainer to be effective you need to have a higher level than your troops, so I think Aqu is right otherwise your gonna have a bunch of militia against the kings of Calradia. I think level 20 is a good area to start thinking about taking your own castle.
