I don't remember ever getting renown for releasing lords. Just increase your reputation with them.
As for getting renown, I'm by no means an expert, but tournament wins is a good way. Fighting enemies that are stronger than you is another good way (early on, I can normally get decent renown for the Sea Raiders). Later, if you join a faction, joining battles against other lords is a good way.
Otherwise, I don't know of a way to get "easy" renown. M&B isn't something that is "easy" or "quick" imo.
But then again, nothing beats a hex editor in speed of gaining renown.
Garrison or disband all your troops save companions. Kill bandits. A whole lot faster than taking on AI lords (unless you go on Wuss difficulty). The number of bandits is related to your level so, it's pretty much 50 renown (there is a cap) per short battle. Keeping your party size low also means you don't have to chase them at all. Watch for deserters during war time. Easy, fast kills, especially Huscarls. Lots of exp, easy kills.
You also gain exp faster (why in Calradia do people insist on 'training' the peons)... spend your effort/time on troops that never die instead. The rest can get trained on the job.
