How do you get gear early on?
I've heard farming looters is the best but they only spawn very rarely so i pretty much can't progress

Early on, Mountain Bandits (mainly in the mountains WNW of Veluca), Forest Bandits (mainly in the forests NE of Uxhal), and Taiga Bandits (mainly between Khudan and Curaw) are the best targets for grinding levels and if you have some points in Prisoner Management then you can sell any prisoners to a ransom broker (using a blunt weapon and troops that use blunt weapons like Manhunters will let you take many prisoners). After you've leveled enough then the Sea Raiders that mostly patrol between Rivacheg, Wercheg, and Sargoth are the best bandits for gaining free gear since many of them wear Mail Shirts, Nordic Helmets, and sometimes Nordic Warlord Helmets. Sea Raiders seem to especially like to concentrate just west of Rivacheg around Bulugha Castle.

I noticed early i was given a quest to kill of a seabandits camp. I ended up not doing it and just farmed all the searaiders that cameout of it with crossbow man. The sea raiders have limited range and if you have a good amount of crossbowman and just have them hold the point you spawn on you can famr them all you want. I used Rhodok crossbowmen not sure how good they are vs other nations ranged units but they seem very effective.

just go to rhodkoks and recruit their guys and once they upgrade once you can make them crossbowmen and they crush bandits of all kinds. Once you get like 20 to 30 crossbowmen grab some nords and make them your infantry to stand in front of the crossbowman.

well you start off a new game with somthing you can sell for a nice bit of gold and the guy who gives you thefirst quest gives you money to recruit some guys.

used that money on dead guys, and now i'm left with no money, no armor and a club with no way to get money

Maybe your difficulty is too high? Reducing damage to yourself and your allies to medium if you have it on normal (or lowest if already on medium) should make things easier while you learn the game. If you have no money and no recruits then you might need to start a new game and pick the highest choice for each question during character creation for the most money.

Start over as it sounds like your not very far invested into your character. What difficulty are you playing on and what type of character did you make?

there is also sea raiders you get good gear from them and is you can escape them you can usually find a lord hunting them help them out and you still get loot. when you get a few good men you can take on the smaller groups. some easier bandits are the forest bandits till you can level you troops up enough. use what money you start with and what you can sell to buy troops to begin with as long as you have them and you can at least antaganize the enemy and dont bite off more than you can chew you should be ok, also do the intro quest.

where can i find a ransom broker?

at taverns sometimes they are there and sometime not. You gotta go from city to city till you find one as they move around.
