1) You cannot choose the weapon you will use in the arena in all mods, only in some.
2) Some mods will quickly remove all weapons dropped by defeated combatants.
3) Some mods will not spawn as loot anything that was not readied when the user went down.
4) You cannot keep any weapons picked up in the arena after the fight is over.
5) If a bow has remained as loot on the arena floor, you can pick it up for sure, but unless you also have arrows, you will not be able to fire.
6) Not all items that are drawn by the game can be picked up and used. Some are considered broken, so you can see them being held in the hands of the fallen, but they will not give you a prompt.
I can pick up the ammo no prob because those slots are empty but I can't pick up the weapon because I'm still holding onto one.
If this is your problem, just drop the weapon you no longer need by equipping it and pressing "G" (for drop item) and then you will be able to pick up the other weapon.
Two things to keep in mind: 1) Make sure you aren't standing on top of the weapon you want when you drop the one you no longer need, and 2) This is very difficult to do while guys are trying to kill you.
A true master would do it while riding by on a horse!
So I guess the relevant answers were #3 and #6.
On the arena and on the battlefield, when a friend or enemy goes down, you are not guaranteed to be able to pick up their weapon. Some items are considered too damaged to be used, I guess.
This is heavily mod dependent. In Gekokujo, you will hardly ever get a new weapon in the dojo. In the Floris arena, you can pick up every item in the arena, as long as the enemy was using it. Note that if the archer has had time to switch to a dagger, you will be able to grab the dagger, but not the bow.
