Both are brutally harder than Native Warband at full difficulty. Both still have some bugs with the storyline. Both are less polished than many mods. And yeah, in both, you may find that the story pushes you in a direction you do not want to go - you can't really play as a viking raiding the weaklings, or as a Crimean Muslim wanting to have another go at Europe, and follow the story line.

But Viking Conquest is more advanced, technically. Fire and Sword is a OK mod, but has been since surpassed by other mods - story, custom quests, firearms, you can find them elsewhere. Viking Conquests has new mechanics.

I think it is all about the subject matter. Which time period do you find more interesting?

The 17th Century struggles between the Russian Empire and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth over Ukraine, with Sweden and the Tatar waiting to get as much as they can for themselves? Or Britain's struggle against the Vikings raids?

Early firearms, the early sunset of cavalry, unpronounceable (for some) Eastern European names?

Crappy steel, crappy horses and swords, the time of the axe, spear and shieldwall, unpronounceable (for some) Celtic, Norse, etc... names?

Viking Conquest all day and yes, you can play as a vikings raiding puny english. You just have do the first part in Friese then, join Ragnarsons. You play as you want through the period of Dane Law.
