The Viking Conquest is pretty unpolished at this point, and not really recommended by most who play it.
Napoleonic Wars is a very good multiplayer DLC with the biggest community. It's really good.
If you want to get a DLC I'd recommend Napoleonic Wars for multiplayer and Viking Conquest for singleplayer.
NW is multiplayer only, so aside from being based in the Victorian era of warfare, there's not much to it.
VC has a ridiculous number of features over the base game, because the base game is pretty meh. But as mentioned it's much more of a single-player experience since the MP is meh.
It has a storyline mode you can play, OR you can play the traditional sand-box style game (you can also tweak some of the settings to your liking. (In story-mode, certain scripted battles result in perma-death if you fall in combat and certain options aren't available until further in the story campaign).
It's basically a more polished version of the Brytenwalda mod, since it's made by the same people. It had some pretty serious issues when it first came out, but that's been addressed now, and there's a new update coming out soon-ish, that will add 3 more story modes (can't remember them all, but there's a Irish one and a Scottish(Pict) one), and expand a BUNCH of the content. I'd say it's worth it now, but it'll DEFINITELY be worth it after the reforged edition comes out.
That is one thing I think the base game could use is a chance of perma death and killable lords. But not necesarily all the time, just a chance. AIso What is this reforged edition? Is it just an update to the existing DLC or do you acquire it through seperate means?
intersting. it also seems VC has better graphics too
Not to be nit picky (but I will be anyway). The Nepolionic Wars were before the Victorian era, 1799-1815. Queen Victoria's reign started in 1837.
Anyway back to the subject at hand, I do own both DLC's, not overly impressed by VC due to bugs, however, the devs are working on it, so I wouldn't write it off completly.
NW is in my opinion fantastic, like it has been stated, it is multiplayer only, although there are a few human vs. bots servers out there. If you enjoy your history and like the idea of recreating battles with other people, there are some great regiments out there (some who roleplay more than others) who will welcome you and teach you all you need to know.
If you are interested in NW and wanting to experience regimental play, add me on steam and I'll discuss it more with you.
Viking Conquest is not worth it at the moment. The DLC has to many bugs and crashes frequently. There is suppose to be a new "Reforged Edition" coming out "soon" which will hopefully make the DLC worth it.
You dont really need the DLCs. Native Warband and free mods are all you will need, and there are many free mods which are as good or better than the DLCs.
