Appointing a Minister for the first time...
So, after I got my first fief, I appointed a prominent noble from the surrounding country as minister. One day, I "accidentally" fired him, and now I have no minister. I still haven't gotten a message about appointing a new one, and it's been about 50 or so in game days.

So how can one appoint a new minister without a current minister?

if youre married i think you might be able to ask your wife if she would like to become a minister, or you can ask one of your companions. im not 100% sure if this will work because its never happened to me

I usually grab one of the extra companions I don't want to keep in my party and appoint them as minister. While they are minister they won't argue with party members or cause any relations penalty. I chose Matheld last time.

Yep, that's exactly what I do. You can also do that to get cheap right-to-rule boosts: recruit an extra companion into your party just long enough to send them on a mission to gather support, then disband them as soon as they return. If you're really evil you can take their equipment before you disband them -- Nizar comes with a courser and scimitar!

I have been known to use them for right to rule and take their stuff. However, I also will sometimes let them join for a minute just to upgrade their stuff later on as I upgrade party gear. Mostly this is just for role play to dress them up in the most appropriate gear I happen to have rather than just sell it all. They wind up with much better gear than I borrowed earlier so I imagine they should not be upset about it.
