Yes you do. Alternatively you can go to the holy land directly and recruit a lance from one of their cities if the correct knight owns it (I forget which one)

Or if you don't want to deal with that lance nonsense you can get on good terms with the Teutons (possibly by becoming their mercenary) and you can recruit mounted troops from their castles. They eventually level up into Mounted Knechts. They're also fantastic once they get there.
