What determines the rent gained from castles?
Also, sometimes it says none at all.

The one which is near the castle+ when you take the castle this village will change the color of its faction.

I don't bother with owning castles much anyway and give them to my lords because it requeres garrison and brings you not that much money.

So what do you do to earn money?

1) what mods are you playing?
2) What point are you at in your playthrough? (ie: are you a vassel or a mercenary?)

As a vassel, you primarily earn money via rents from fiefs each week. The fiefs that (in my experience) give the most rent are cities (like Wercheg, Suno, etc) and (oddly enough) well maintained villages (talk to the village elder and help him with quests to boost the local ecconomy), with the caveat that you lose all rents from villages that get pillaged or whose castle/town gets taken over. Castles are not very profitable, however they are handy to have because they serve as garrisons for your army (it's nice to put extra troops you dont need in a castle and not have to pay them full wages, as well as store excess equipment and items somewhere). You can also go into any city and talk to the guildmaster about buying land for a productive enterprise, each one having it's own startup costs and taking a week to start paying you money. All of the above will automatically be figured into your weekly budget, along with wages for your troops.

Another way to earn money is by trading, buying commodities from city 1 and selling them in city 2 for a profit (a simple concept, that I'm sure you're already familiar with). This can be either VERY lucrative or make you lose money. The secret is to have someone with a high trade skill in your group and take some time to assess prices. Have some way of taking notes and make note of the prices and routes that you discover.

Finally, we have tournaments....ok, not the tournaments themselves, but betting on yourself. If you're good at fighting, and you have enough seed money to get started, this will give you some pretty good returns the first few times you participate.
