Key words : " if you decide you like the game well enough, go on and buy a license online". Buy, not "type a random key".
Doesn't seems legit to me to type a random key (or any key you find on the internet) and have it for free. Can you do that ? Yes probably. Is it legit ? I don't think so, unless I read otherwise.
Just like you can break into a house and take everything inside. It's not even that hard to break a window. Doesn't mean it's legit.
The point is, is that if you aren't complete swine don't cheat a delevoper out of their money. So, for the sake of morality, you should probably not use that copy you got for "free".
morals kinda dont matter at this point since 95% of the players have been so happy they actually bought the game, just for the heck of it and steam achievements.
i used to first play a non-legal version of the basegame, not warband, for almost two thousand hours until i figured it was time to support the dev. Bought it off from their website (Both games, warband and the original) Just to support them.
Then now, in 2014, i decided it was time to buy it for my steam account as well. So ive bought the game many times just to support taleworlds. all because the free way of testing the game and playing it trough made me to.
A good game with a solid gameplay like warband, never should be afraid of losing sales because of warez. Witcher 3 doesnt have DRM (they saved bunch of money AND BUGS because of not using DRM) and look how many people have actually bought it. even im going to buy it, although i finished it already in an non-legal version.
I doubt that 95% of the people who pirate this game actually bought it at a later date, after all, we don't have any stats to even remotely back this up. I actually wouldn't be surprized if 25% of the people who "own" mount & blade: warband actually have the pirated version, and never actually plan on buying the legal version, but then again we will never know since there is no evidence to back up anything about the stats of pirating vs. legal purchase.
This is what demos, and even steam refunds are for, after all, one shouldn't choose to pirate a game just "to test the waters" when there is perfectly fine demo; and especially now since there are steam refunds.
Every game should be afraid to lose sales to pirating, after all there will always be scum who have no sense of honour or integerity and pirate a game whether its good or not. You might pay for the legal verison if you like and enjoy the game, but do you really think the next person who pirates warband will?
its kinda pointless anyways to discuss about pirating, since its kinda like IRL crime. there aint a way to fix it, people find a way to go around it.
