But at the end of the day, I prefer having a shield, and if not, I'll go for speed over damage. Thus, a sword.
I think the one handed axes are better than the larger ones though. The best axe in the game in my opinion is the big pictish axe. 1H/2H weapons have damage and speed penalties when used one handed. So if you plan to use a shield then a normal 1H weapon is better.
If you don't want to use a shield then there are a number of 1H/2H options and at least one 2H option available. A 1H/2H weapon functions exactly like a 2H weapon if used two handed.
go to youre refuge, take a walk around youre refuge and (talk) to the armor guy (i thing you gonna hire the armor guy first) (hire staff) and choose the answer " I like your weapons, but i need something more....special" then you choose " I´d like something else, surprise me" ( 4 options, i think 19000 pennings) blabla blub...luck, luck, luck
i get a Bear Byrnie, 13 to head armor, 47 to body armor and 25 to leg armor
the Wolf Byrnie looks a little bit better (more bling-bling) but have 12 to head armor
