[VC] Sailors are still useless more than tits on the bull.
My main problem with the game is the fact that Sailors are useless and pointless to recruit. Why can't they level up to Marines/Reavers/Sea Raiders and why can't they be left as Garrison with the boats? shored boats should be capturable or destroyable if enemy lord/vassal attacks them. The small contigent of marines left with the boat would be nice event to add to the game.

Marines? Like with rifles and grenades?

Marines existed way before rifles and grenades.

Hm, I recruit them just once and they died very fast.

You dont need them to recruit?

The rest of my Vikings from a Freehold to Huscarls row very well.

Sailors are useless in combat because they're meant to be. They make your ships travel faster, which makes them anything but useless outside of combat.

However, from my limited testing, it seems that they make you travel faster according to the % of sailors in your army, and not according to sailors/ship or something like that. Which does seem a bit stupid.

You know what else make you go the fastest on the sea in game? having navigation skill of 10 and hired old captains, which make sailors completely useless. Why would I want idiots in my army that can't learn anything new and more worthless in any fight than peasant women?

I can see the point of them. You can get them for 40 currency each from the old sea captain in a port, so they're cheap early troops. If I were to play as a trader, I'd definitely use them. Or maybe keep a bunch of them as garrison in a city for when I'm going on a trip that isn't directly a war campaign.

But yeah, they suck and it sucks that you can't upgrade them.

Sailors are great because you can get them for cheap with no renown or relations early on in the game. They also make cheap filler to replace lossess until you find better warriors. Not very good in battle but they can at least keep the size ratio of forces up so you are not completely outnumbered. Faster sea travel is just a bonus.

Want to know what is worse? Fishermen. Guess what they upgrade into.

Fisher -> Upgrade -> Sailor
Just a cheap Skirmisher - like Bandit or other Tier 2 units - they do have that move speed bonus on Sea but that doesn't feel so great (more units, more ships, more food consumption, more wages, the possibilty to slow you down instead to speed up)- otherwise if you are in need of some skirmishers they are easy to obtain

If done right cheap Tier 2 skirmishers are able to destroy enemies - a map with some hills and a high battle size can give you the perfect advantage - more importanty to fill the gaps with enough troops so you can field enough troops in battle

Definitly they are not great but which Tier 2 unit is really good? - okay they do have a problem with upgrades to Tier 3 at least (just don't know what upgrade they should get)

They should branch out to Sea Raiders, or Marine or maybe even Vikingir, even non elite vesion of one. You might be right that they are maybe just MAYBE somethat useful from the early days, but they do not scale up with the rest as other army units do. Even Camp Defenders have better stats than them, furthermore it seems that boat speed is related to ratio of sailors in the fleet not to their actual number in the fleet. That means if you have lets say 40 sailors and the larger army you have, you become slower and slower. I dont know about hilly battles either, they seem to die in one hit with no armor or weapon and shield, especially to the head (lol woolen hats against axe or spear). Thus it would be nice to add at least anothe tier of upgrade that takes long time or at least make sailors to branch out to other typical sea raiders like vikings or make them marines.
