yellow means Weather is affecting the damage/range of the weapon.
As far as I know, throwing weapons have the smallest arc of fire from horseback. It's about 180°. Bows are next, and cover a bit more than that, and crossbows allow you to fire in an arc of about 270°
What makes one different from the other is that some arcs are more or less front centered (javelins) and while others are left centered (bows)
Which one you prefer depends, I guess, on whether you tend to charge, circle, or flee from your opponent.
If you are charging at the enemy and want to soften them up right before your impact, the javelins allow you the best choice of target.
If you are trying to distract a enemy cavalry charge away from your troops, while whittling it down, the bow's ability to shoot behind you (Parthian shot) is priceless.
If you are circling a shield wall, trying to keep it focused on you, while your guys massacre all auxiliaries, all weapons work fine.
