You could also make your companions a vassal
1. If you have town/castle/village that isn't assigned to anyone, some fief-less lords from other factions will appear in your capital's hall. If you talk to them, there will be an option to accept them. Some of these lords can have bad personalities though.
2. If a lord really dislike his current king and likes you more, you can go ask him to join your faction.
3. You can ask your companions to become a vassal.
