As for polearms, most of them cannot be swung on horseback - you can only use them to couch or poke. Which is fine.
What is b.ullshit is that you can swing weapons like the shorter bardiches, the pure two handed swords, the long two handed axes, and even mauls with one hand from horseback. What is also really lame is that you can use big unbalanced polearms like the poleaxe as a spear/lance from horseback
As I said above, Native Warband has no true two handed sword, which was a monstrosity that is better classified as a polearm, and was developed to defeat pikes. What you call 'pure' two handed swords are swords that barely exceed one meter in length and weight slightly more than a kilo. Definitely usable from horseback. They would be clumsy, which is modeled by the fact that they are both slower and cut less well, from horseback, than any of the sabers.
Bardishes, at least the Russian variant developed for стрельцы, is definitely usable from horseback. As a matter of fact, it was standard equipment for the Moscovi dragoons, and has been used historically multiple times while mounted, for hit and run raids and for slaughtering routed troops.
Mauls. Ok, that is pure bиllsнiт, but unfortunately, you cannot find true mauls in any video game... well apart from some of the better Mount and Blade mods. Ever since Cohan's opening scene, mauls have been portrayed in a way that has become too ingrained in Western consciousness. Real mauls have nothing to do with 15l displacing wooden hammers[i.imgur.com], but that's what people think they are.
And if they are going to make them usable from horseback, why can't you use them with a shield? It is probably realistic that you that use CAN use them from horseback, but when doing so, the weapons often feel more effective than the shorter swords intended for cavalry.
Haven't heard of the russian use of bardiches combined with horses, but I can understand how it could be effective against fleeing troops.
