Why would you want a higher rep?
Low rep = feared
Lords still respect you for being feared. Most lords are feared.
The only two things I know for sure can be repeated to raise reputation are:
-Accept the hunt down the runaway slave quest and allow him to run away.
-Leave all loot after a battle and bury the dead.
Both of these only raise your reputation by 1 point.
Murdering defenceless civilians, burning villages, lying, stealing, etc. will obviously ruin your reputation.
Reputations are much easier to destroy than they are to build up.
A high reputation has all sorts of benefits from the prices you get from merchants, the interactions with NPCs, etc. You can build a good rep slowly over time if you get into the habit of being a decent person in the game. Behaving like your fellow NPC lords will get you -130 in no time.
No lords fear scumbags. They fear strong armies and that is it. Some of them prefer the company of other scumbags but most do not. Towns and villages do not either.
Giving donations to holy men increases rep with their religion. Giving cows to villages (yes, for free) will also give you a point. You can't just farm reputation, in Viking Conquest anyway. People figure out what you are up to pretty quickly and free cows don't impress anyone after a while.
I was pretty choked with a massive negative rep and stopped raiding villages and pillaging castles. It isn't difficult to build it back up and by the time you get to mid-game, you won't be needing the extra money you get by being a badass anymore.
In the early game I find that I pretty much have to burn and pillage, just to get by. Now that I'm the lord of a couple of cities, I want to clean up my act a bit. It's not something you can fix in one gaming session though, it's more of a long-term thing.
Now that my rep is up to around fifty or so, I can start making more informed choices like taking a rep hit for refusing an insultingly small ransom offer.
It all comes down to choices and consequences. Don't fool yourself into believing that it doesn't make any difference. That's just the nonsense village burners tell themselves.
Some easy ways to increase rep are:
- Free villages from bandits, and then ask for no reward
- Free noble prisoners
- Most random events (kill bandits if they ask to join you, etc.)
- Killing bandits in special locations (like the stone row)
There's definitly more, but I don't really look at my rep anymore. Just be a good guy and watch dat rep rise.
PS: Forgot about refusing reward after killing a criminal in vaillages (the quest offered by lords for 300 peningas)
By the way, my reputation is well over 400, and there do not seem to be any obvious benefits... except that I am having no trouble controlling cities and troops from both religions, and relations with fiefs seem to be going up on their own.
If you have a town, how come you only have 2 farmsteads?
How come you need so many troops? Did you join a faction that is constantly at war with everyone?
Why don't you earn money through trade? Too busy defending against enemies because your faction is at war with everybody?
Sorry, I corrected it to say village. And yes, the faction I am part of is pretty constantly at war. I enjoy battles and find it to be good money, so it works well for me. I only have two farmsteads because I have only built them in towns of my faction.
Oh, and I decided to raid a bunch of monestaries so every Christain nation hates me...
But yea. Raiding monestaries, becoming vassal of a faction that is constantly at war, and doing so before you have a good bunch of farmsteads won't exactly make things easy.
