City taxes, caravan fees, and a few enterprises easily pay my wages. And if I feel that I am running low, I rob some robbers. Sea raiders make the best piñatas.

Not the best option, fastest option. but will hit your economy later game when you lose money because the villagers are poor instead of rich.

It took me a really long time to understand the value of starting enterprises in each city. At first it seemed pointless because each one generates only a little weekly revenue in relation to how much it costs to start them. But they are the only form of passive income in the game apart from fief rents, and the steady income they provide really adds up over time.

If you start a business in every city you could eventually be getting 5-10k denars from them every week. That is more than enough to keep a large army employed. After that, any additional money you get from trading or looting just adds to your bank account.

Without that stream of passive income, you are fighting a constant battle against the clock, trying to earn enough money to pay your troop wages each week. Eventually you will be forced to do things you don't want to do (like raiding villages) just to avoid going bankrupt. Having those enterprises keeps you solvent and in control of your destiny.

Only been playing Viking Conquest for a while, but my army's about 108-163 of pretty high tier guys which runs me anywhere between 4500-5200 so far a week. Mainly, I pick fights with the toughest bandits and try to knock 'em out to sell them to a ransom broker, then their most valuable get to any vendor. Also, as an example in VC, Dorestad in Friese pays a LOT of money for wool, I'm talking 700+ plus for a single unit, so I'll go around the brittain and drop by every settlement grabbing iron and wool at a rate of 30-50 a piece and go sell it back in Dorestad, meanwhile Wine in Dorestad is pretty cheap, like 100-400 and sells for 700 or so in other cities, so a good run while fighting bandits, selling them as slaves, flipping their gear is a good way to make money. Also, leadership is great, the more buddies you have that have a decent score in leadership, the more it'll lower the cost for your troops.

So far I have about, oh... Eight companions, 7 elite 'old captains', 12 nobles, about 30-40 mid range spearmen, captured elite mercenaries and some horsemen to mop up archers and 'runners'. Also, check on quests for lords/kings and mayors, sometimes you'll get some lucrative ones that don't take much time to complete, though avoid being in bad standing with villagers, you want their goods and you want them to stay happy. Oh yeah, tournaments are another way of doing it on occasion, at least in Viking Conquest, if you bet on yourself in each round at 100 silver, you'll end the competition with 4000 gold or so, just put the damage taken to 1/4 so it's feasible and save before you try, if you fail, reload. Not sure if it's the same in your version of the game, but that's my way of making cash and mitigating my expenses.

The most important skill in the game is leadership because leadership reduces the wages of ALL your troops, even those in garrisons. Plus wages are a natural "cap" to prevent you from having 10,000 top tier troops, though that still is possible, it's a soft cap.
