do Castles train your men while your away
I have a bunch of men in my Castle but I was wondering if having a high training stat also trains them in the castle so I can have a full force of highly trained people to go and get if I need.

No, only people in your party get trained.

There is actually a loophole for this, but you need to be the king of your own faction in order for it to work. If you take a castle, you can choose not to award it to anyone. If the castle has no lord, you can move troops in and out of it whenever you want, and the troops in the garrison will slowly train up over time. I think there must be a certain amount of experience that gets shared among the entire garrison each day, because a small garrison (say 20 soldiers) will train up much more quickly than a large garrison. The only downside is that you will be paying weekly wages for the garrison while collecting no rents from the castle.

There are mods that allow you to give a task to a person in your court to train troops in one garrison. The training is pretty slow compared to training in your party. It also allows additonal troop options such as automatic recruitment and movement as well as forming patrols. The mod I use it in is Freelancer but I believe this feature is part of Diplomacy which is in many mods.

Auto calc battles, including those when you castle is seiged is based on numbers not the tier of the troops. So, in theory it is better to have a castle with 500 recruits than 100 knights or sharpshooters if you are not there to directly aid in the defence.

Castels( and towns) only effect on troops is a lower weekly wage. This is supose to encourage you to put good defenders at a castle, thefore insuring its not easily captured. Then again, in native if your not there, a higher amount of soldiers is better to a low amount but high tier unit base. ( as metioned by Miiiiiiiiiiiiike)
Its normaly wise to have a 80/20, Foot soldier to archer ratio in a castle.
In a town, 70/30.
Then again some castle/town layouts encourage different ratios.

One castle ( can't remeber the name, think Turin) is better to have only mele, since archers have not a very good angle to shoot. ( only applys if you are present ! )

Wow that actually works? I could just get tons of recruits and put them in? hmm thanks!

Apparently. But the bad thing is if you ever need to boost up your party with good troops all you have are recruits in reserve. So top up the castles/towns with recruits on top of a decent number of good people is a good idea.

i will take a 50% ratio of uber elites and recruits out and about. and chase down easy to kill off rebels etc. depends on the mod or if its plain mbw. id rec you have at least a 4 in training in the party. rename the recruits, for battle commands. let your elites do the dirty work. keep your recruits in the back in battles. after a few battles your guys will advance up pretty quick then dump them off and repeat. you could also just sit out side a castle, town etc and camp train for a week or 2. but this really kills your morale. the camp training is the fastest way with a decent traing skill. but you will kill you current moral etc.
