Why use blunt weapons?
I've tried using maces both in single and multiplayer to no avail. They're slow, small, and requires high stats. They kill just about in the same hits as swords (if not less). The only advantage is the slim chance of knocking down someone. Pierce weapons like picks are in the same boat, although not as bad as blunt weapons due to their high damage.

Blunt weapons always knock unconscious and never kill, as well as they do the most damage to armor.

They're an assured knockout instead of a kill. You use them if your character focuses on the Slaver skill in order to get prisoners. Prisoners are then sold as one of the best ways to get money early on.

Good point. There's use for maces on singleplayer.

Yeah, the fact that they knock unconscious enemies is good. But how about multiplayer? Swords kill you in just the same hits as a mace would (2-4) but they're longer and faster.

If you're looking at multiplayer you should also ask what the point of armor is. All the best just run around naked to maximize mobility since they don't even plan on getting hit.

But sometimes you do. Armor was supposed to save you there. But no you're either dying in 1-3 hits with or without lamellar armor.

Armor in Warband is not super realistic. It is a nice compromise, unless you plan on introducing armor damage and deformation, grappling, endurance and fatigue, localized damage, etc. In real life, many armors will completely resist swords slashes to the strong areas, and you would need a weapon like a flanged mace to really do much.

But even in real life, most people carried swords as their sidearms. The chances of having to deal with someone in full plate were a lot less than having to face someone with just a gamberson and a breastplate. And the sword is a great defensive weapon, so if you up against that rare guy in full plate, you'd still be able to survive until he gets mobbed (If you are winning. If you are losing, you'll be able to outrun him)

Two people with heavy armor and longswords might take a long time to produce a winner, and would use half-swording and mordhau.

In most mods, swords work well enough, and you can get away with using them exclusively. In mods with really high level/proficiency/armor A.I. troops (Pendor, Perisno, The Last Days, Suvarnabhumi Mahayuth, etc.) you end up using blunt and piercing weapons because swords are ineffective, especially for egghead characters.

As a matter of fact, in some of those game, I ditch heavy armor myself, because it will not save you against a troll's club (The Last Days) a demonic Magnus's black iron spear (Prophecy of Pendor) a diamond golem's fists (Phantasy) or a dreaded doomguard's sword (Perisno)

In Perisno and Phantasy, against some armies, I fight in super light armor and a blunt weapon.
