In the sandbox, it works as in any other mod.
Because you cannot get rid of them until the story line turns into sandbox, you have to recall the likes and dislikes. To make things worse, the story line will remove some of the companions, and not necessarily those who do not get along with each other. When the sandbox starts, everyone, including those who 'died' in the story line will come back to the Isles, but unless you treated them right, they may choose to become adventurers instead of getting on the tavern circuit.
I ended up with a stable group of eight companions: Asbjorn, Beda, Bodo, Brunhild, Ceawlin, Clovis, Dwywei, and Morgant. I lost Asbjorn and Bodo in the story, but I had very good relations with both, and they joined me later. Most of the others hated me, with the exception of the Greek guy, whom I am planning into making a vassal, eventually, and who keep joining and leaving my party (because I sided against him)
