Took me a long time to stop playing on half damage, and it was only fairly recently i turned off auto-block. I don't think anyone really pays attention to the numbers, but those 3 things are the main determiners of difficulty.

Campaign/battle AI are basically irrelevant. The other stuff has little effect. Player damage is definitely the biggest factor.

Just play on whatever you're comfortable with. Might be better to not use auto-block though, especially if you're gonna play multiplayer at some point.

The game starts you off with a default of 22% or something like that. I'm just starting back up after taking a year off or so from this game and I set mine at 73%. This is basically one of the options at the start where it makes everything Hard/Normal.

Some players max out the difficulty as much as possible.

Like just about any game, you can play it as easy as you like but I suspect most people eventually try something a little harder than easiest everything just to make it more of a challenge for themselves.

In all honesty, making the recruiting/economy harsh is a mistake. I probably wouldn't choose that option twice. This game is kind of rough on training up troops as it is, making it harder is kind of crazy.

(I'm talking about VC btw)

I play with everything set as far as it will go, except for combat speed, which I keep at normal, because otherwise I feel part of the cast of Benny Hill. In Native and most mods, this puts me at 135% difficulty, but other mods are different. Viking Conquest, for example, has a lot more difficulty options, and there I usually end up at 127%. although some videos still display 135%.

Basically there are a few sets of options:
1) Options that give the AI lord advantages on the strategic map
2) Options that reduce the damage your and your friends receive
3) Options that help you with the melee controls
4) Options that make enemy parties bigger or more dangerous\
5) Options that make recruiting, morale, sieging, logistics more realistic

1) Make uniting the map more challenging
2) Force you to use tactics on the battlefield instead of relying on heavy armor
3) Prepare you for multiplayer
4) Add to the challenge in mods which have them (Pendor, Floris, Viking Conquest)
5) Make you feel like a badass warlord

What counts as a friend? Just companions or your troops as well? I play on 78% and it is fun for me like that though I have played quite a bit. I will say, however, that towards the end of my games (just capturing the last few cities) no matter what difficulty you are on it does become a little dull but I think that has more do to with the repetitiveness of just seige battles than it does the difficulty setting

How did you get yours to 135%? The highest I got it when messing around with the settings was 111%

If you look at this video, at the 0:18 mark, you see the difficulty. The mod is Gekokujo.

Here is another, and the difficulty can be seen at the 1:30 mark. The mod is Viking Conquest.

I do not know why yours maxes out at 111%. Are you sure that you increased everything, including the number of combatants on the battlefield?

In Native I play at 124%, that's 150 battle-size and all options as difficult as possible with the exception of blocking. I've left that at automatic - I use a shield 99% of the time anyway :)

I am in native with the same settings and it is at 111%, could just be a bug or something

It may be a bug, but I think it is more likely that you have left some interface assist in the options. Like for example, couching on easy manual control.
