Viking conquest tips
I recently bought Viking conquest and I am in love with it. But since it is so different from native I was wondering if any of you veterans might share some tips and tricks

The starting stats of your character are a lot more important, because you only get a stat point at levels 6, 11, 16, etc...

If you are playing the story, your character must be able to fight. He still may be very intelligent, or less usefully, very charismatic, but he cannot be a weakling.

A sword and a shield will see you better through more situations than any other weapon combination.

Throwing weapons from horseback are devastating.

Depending on the role you intend to play in battle, the heaviest equipment is not necessarily the most effective. As your character becomes more powerful, some penalties will become less important, and you may want to reassess your favorite equipment.

You need to understand formations, and use them properly, unless you are playing at low difficulty.

Horses are for mobility, not charges. Cavalry troops have their uses, but glorious charges is absolutely not one of them.

It is easy to be a successful Pagan raider. You will have piles of gold, outlaws queuing to join you, and enemies breaking easily in battle. Being a successful monarch if you started as a bloodthirsty reaver is anything but easy.

Villages often sell goods at prices much lower than what cities pay for them, even more so than in Native.

------

This should be enough to get you started.

when getting your first people to follow you, one can offer to bring a slave back to a village, then not keep you word and offer the slave a place in your band.

The story is quite boring and pointless IMO. You can try sandbox, there are more options to skip the beginner's grinding. Just get familiar to VCRE, then export your character to story mode if you still want to try it.

Why do this? Slave is weakest, no armor no proper weapon, fight like a chick(literally) and can be killed by one swing. I only keep one in my party for show(but I got him from defeating bandits). Also keep the slave(not return them to their proper master) will damage your relations with village. This is pre-medieval time, a slave is just a slave, the most low life in the universe, he deserved it. Nobody, include the slave himself, will appreciate your 'freedom' and 'liberty'.
A peasant woman is far more 'useful' for your party. Remember this, never upgrade a peasant woman to upper level.
Sure VCRE is not for liberal lol.

And don't waste time on pole-arms, there are no lance charge(not invented yet), no couch damages. The bow skill is only for boar hunting, because almost everyone got shield. The javelin/throwing spear are very good in duel but less useful in mass fighting.

Thanks everyone for the tips. I think I'll play sandbox instead of the story

I played as a female char with high charm once. Getting married to a castle owner was quick. While the char was flimsy she had the advantage of drawing good troops (for free) from husbands castles/cities.

Here are my tips:

When it's night out, camp. Unless you are in enemy territory and need to evade an enemy army there is no need to be marching over night. Camping in town has a small fee but it saves money on food stores in your inventory.

Early on try being a trader to increase that bank account. Friese's capital is Dorestad. Dorestad sells jewelry and wine for cheap prices. And Friesian villages sell salt dirt cheap. When you make a trade route include them in it. They give the most drastic improvements to your coffers.

Norveskr sells lumber, mead, iron, soapstone and tar for cheap, Danmark sells furs and amber for a discount, Ireland is a good place to buy flax, all of England sells grain for dirt cheap.

Invest in farmstead in every city. Do this and you can maintain a 150-200 man army at all times and still turn a profit.

Build your refuge on the coastline and it will give you the option of building docks for your ships when you are able to upgrade it. A prime location for your refuge is on the Eastern coast of England.

If you are trying to fully optimize your armies the best troops are as follows:
Saxon line - Thegn (Heavy spearmen)
Angle line - Gedriht (Heavy swordsmen)
Norse line - Huskarl (Heavy sword/axemen)
Norse line - Heimthegi (Heavy archers)
Pict line - Cruithnen (Crossbowmen)
Pict line - Toisech (Cavalry spearmen)
Irish line - Fianaige (Javelin skirmishers)
Irish line - Marchach (Cavalry skirmishers)
Friesian line - Riddere (Cheap cavalry)
Britons line - Nothing

The Irish have the best two handed infantry but without a shield these troops are more of a liability than a boon. If you insist on using them, keep them by your archers to dissuade cavalry attacks on your archers. Or put them right behind your shield wall and spread them out. Either way don't expect them to live long.

Viking troops are great in battle but cost a lot to maintain. Keep them in forts to keep their costs down and only take them out for major battles or if you plan to keep a small troop composition.

Do quests for villages and cities by speaking to the mayor and local leader. The more a place likes you the more troops and higher quality of troops you will get from them.

The Skeid and the Busse are the best ships in the game. Skeid is the 2nd largest and also the fastest. If you are a trader buying only Skeid ships will allow you to outrun any sea Raiders you come across. And Busse holds the most troops so late game you want to get all Busse ships.

Your armada is only as fast as your slowest ship. Never buy a byrding ship. They are worthless.

Sometimes letting a lord escape capture is a good thing. They will show you favor and may return the favor in the future. And are more likely to join you shoukd you join a rival kingdom or become a king yourself. Unless they are debauched in which case ♥♥♥♥ them and slap some shackles on the guy.

I know a few other things are are more specific but these are the gist of what you need to know to have a good start.

You don't have to utilize your stats to be a trader but if playing the story mode you get access to Friese right away and you also get a free ship out of the deal plus two companions when you do a few story quests. And small spoiler with the story, you get outlawed from Friese. But this can be remedied later in the game when Friese goes to war with another nation. You can approach a Friesian lord in those lands and ask for a pardon. They will ask for money to grant this but getting back on the good side of Friese will help immensely in getting money to work with. And whatever the payment is its nothing compared for the revenue you gain back from 1 trip selling all the goods you got from Friese.

You really should play the story though. You get some unique weapons and armor out of the deal and a fairly accurate history lesson. And once you get out of the story mode you can be in a real good position to start your own faction.

I never thought the dumbest thing I'd ever read in my entire life would be a comment on a Mount & Blade game but here we are. How you get through each day is a wonder.
