I haven't tried Gekokujo yet because i don't like the setting, maybe i'll try it now :0
If you want an polished, optimized, relatively historically accurate, well tuned mod that will not kick your teeth in, I'd recommend Gekokujo, and if you want even more historical verisimilitude, use the Sengoku submod.
The best overhaul mod is Perisno. It adds a ton of new races, weapons, mounts, merchants, and more! You can do a lot more in Perisno then you can in vanilla and they have Orcs, dwarves, holy crusaders, all of it. Perisno also adds in events LATER on in game! For example on day 150, (you can change it in settings), the Zann Dynasty arrives on the shores. They are a new and very powerful faction that you need to try to beat. Other factions will also appear later on in the game and quests you saw in the beginning will come back around to bite you later. I have over 500 hours in the mod and Im not bored yet. If you like LoTR and fantasy stuff I'd get Perisno. They also have great music.
If you're going for a multiplayer mod I'd go for Full Invasion 2. FI2 adds a new game mode where the player survives against waves of bots with other people. It has many factions including, but not limiting, Star Wars, LoTR, Vanilla, China, Japan, and more! Its a multiplayer only mod so theres no campaign but its a lot of fun. You can play on Minas Tirith trying to save Gondor, or you can crouch in the corridors of a space station waiting for droids to walk down and shoot lasers at you.
If you're into a multiplayer mod that has regiments and a big player base I'd grab North and South. N&S is a Civil War mod that includes a lot of new aspects such as bleeding, and better guns. Again it has a big community so hop in a regiment and join massive battles.
Now if Bear Force 2 is still alive I'd also take a look at it. Its a star wars mod which used to have regiments, (They still might.) Its fun to run from bunker to bunker dodging lasers and watching clones and droids being shot down left and right.
If you're into old civilizations I would get Gekojuko. Its a japanese mod that sets the date in the samurai era. They have guns and bows, neither super powered. When I first got M&B I played this mod a lot, its good fun.
I was never into Floris so I cant recommend it to you. The last I played it the arrows were extremely large and it took the fun out of the game to watch arrows as big as your characters arm flying around, seeming unrealistic. (Again that was like 3 years ago so im sure that its fixed. (; )
The Last Days is a single player LoTR Mod. I played it a lot and really enjoyed it. Although I never got very far into it I still managed to have a blast ambushing Orcs and Uruk Hai in the woods with a small Gondorian force. Im pretty sure Prophecy of Pendor is another good LoTR mod so check that out too ;)
Also. *checks his arrow* Yeeeap! Still loooooong like my arm!
