If you do not have such skill, as soon as the battle starts, issue the [1][F1][F1] command.
OR open the command menu [Backspace] and click where you want them to line up.
OR hold [F1], point where you want them, and release the key.
In general, you probably want to investigate the commands you can issue with the [1]-[0] and [F1]-[F4] keys. If you are playing a mod, those commands change, sometimes greatly.
Yea I got the hang of commands, didn't know about the tactics skill though. Looks like I know what I'm upgrading next!
It does other stuff, as well - it allows you to get away with a smaller force to fight a delaying action, for example.
In general, you should have all party skills at 10, at the very least, through companions.
Three of the party skills, Surgeon, Path-Finding and Engineering are well worth having on your main character, for the player. If you are building a boffin, +4 is awesome, but even a combat beast should provide +1 or +2.
