1000 is a lot yes, but then you also do not have any trouble to become marshall, if you want the title you probably get it. You can get it earlier for sure, just step up and talk to the lords. There is no downside (I know of) for trying.
Saving villagers from bandits also gets you about the same.
In my last run, in Native, I had 2123 renown 41 days after the beginning of the game. Of course, I mixed tournaments, lord rescues and village liberation in there, too.
If I ever pick it up again, I will not be able to pull off the melee feats I used to...
Particularly, people should watch how you take on fairly large groups of sea raiders with just companions. I now do it similarly. Fighting 40ish sea raiders is great exp for the companions, great gear, solid renown, and if you actually put a point or two into prisoner management (and the ransom broker is in town), great ransoms too. I always have to use the chest in town to store the most expensive vendor items because otherwise the merchants run out of cash.
