Then you can keep playing, but apart from killing bandits and deserters, there is nothing to do.

There are mods with a definite ending, though. I would not play them just for the ending, but at least two of them are worth playing anyway: Prophecy of Pendor and The Last Days of the Third Age.
You can check them all without actually ending your game, after it gives you the ending, you can simply click "Return to adventuring", which is kind of fulfilling and entertaining.
This part always annoyed me in how it didnt make sense.... unless youre your own best friend ... which can be kind of sad.
