Play around with the custom battles and see if the fighting is something for you. If not, you probably find more enjoyment somewhere else.
What you should do in the game is quite simple: fight things, get loot/money, get men and equipment, fight stronger things. But it is up to you, you also can rolepaly as a noble knight and only join tournaments and help poor villagers. M&B Warband does not give you a direction to go.
As far as "what to do?" This isn't a quest game, its an open-ended sandbox. Do what you want. I normally plot to take over the world, which isn't easy, but can be done.
Edit: Note - Yes, the game is worth playing, even "vanilla" without mods. But, once you get familiar with the game's mechanics and can be proficient with interacting with them, you'll likely do what many Warband players do - Use mods. Warband mods are self-contained single mods. You can not run more than one mod for any particular playthrough and can not add/remove them from a playthrough. Any changes like that require you to restart, though mods can be updated and the modder will inform their fans if an update requires a restart. The most popular Warband mods are "total conversion" mods where the entire world, map, units and the like have been changed. These are typically created by Teams of modders. My recommendation to you is to play vanilla Warband until you can successfully become a King, yourself, and start competing with the other factions for rule of Calradia. At that point, you should have enough familiarity with the game's basic mechanics to try some modded playthroughs. Though, keep in mind that many of those may have their own mechanics, too, and that's one of the strengths of Warband modding.
First, follow the starting quest. Go to a village, gather some units, go do the thing. :)

In Warband, the "story" is that all the factions are arguing, and very often warring, over who should be the King of Everything... (Why they just didn't write "Emperor" is beyond me.) To that end, the "win conditions" for the player are pretty simple - Either you join a faction as one of it's Lords and help it "win the game" or you eventually declare your own candidacy, forming your own Kingdom, and put yourself on the throne.
To do either, you have to "git gud." But, "gitting gud" in Warband is about building up your character, your capability to put an army in the field, your wealth to support such a thing, getting the best gear you can, finding allies who will help you (Companion NPCs), winning the trust of the people, earning the respect of Lords and Kings, and being an effective winner of field battles and sieges.
You start with nothing and work your way towards becoming a true power in the world of Calradia.
Start out by interacting with Towns and villages. Talk to Guildmasters and Village Elders to get quests. They're fairly simple, but some can be a bit difficult. You'll need to experience them first to know which ones you'll like.
Trading is a good way to make money in the early game. Buy low, sell high.
Fighting all sorts of Bandits can help you get some cash and loot. You'll want to first get your gear from these battles before you start buying any from vendors in Towns.
All new players should probably choose to join a faction, any faction, as a Mercenary as soon as they can. Check with a faction's Lords/King to see if/when they'd consider hiring you. If so, you can then help them fight their enemies and get access to good loot and experience for upgrading and hiring more troops. Eventually, you should have a good enough reputation to be considered to ascend to a Lord. (You don't have to stay as a mercenary with any faction, but can switch as you wish. Being a Mercenary is not a pre-requisite for becoming a Lord. It's just a likely progression path.)
Once a Lord, you'll be given a fief fairly soon. And, it will likely be a dump... Some poor village at the edge of the faction's territory, most likely, and frequently raided. You'll have to juggle being a Lord of a fief with your other Lordly responsibilities like "winning wars."
As a Lord, you'll be trying to get more fiefs from your King. You'll try to convince other Lords to support your bid for a newly captured fief. You'll capture some on your own, hoping that the King and Lords will see the value in giving you that fief through your actions. (And, how they feel about you - You need to work on your Reputation with other Lords throughout gameplay.)
Buying Profitable Enterprises, gaining wealth, winning Tournaments, helping Towns and Villages prosper by doing quests for them, using your Companions properly, upgrading units, gear, getting married to a suitable spouse in a well-connected family... There's a good bit of stuff to do. Though, keep in mind that while you may have periods of play where you're running around trying to accomplish some quests/tasks or simple kingdom/fief management stuff, your primary focus is going to be defeating enemies on the battlefield with the ultimate goal of winning Sieges until you or your chosen faction controls them all.

Note: Always feel free to post a question in the forum. While forum traffic is sporadic, depending on whatever the latest sale or hot mod updated happens to come out, your question will nonetheless get a decent answer at some point. The wikis are great, just drill-down to what you need and there's good advice and tips in them.
