What's up with the aspect ratio?

I could have sworn back when I played this years ago it looked fine on a 16:9 ratio monitor, but now it looks really off. Mostly it's the UI--it gets stretched out over the whole screen, which makes text and some images look bad. Comparing at full widescreen resolution any town image with one at 4:3 resolution makes it clear the UI element is being stretched to fill the space, which makes any artwork look terrible, and the text a little odd.

Was it always this way? Am I going insane?

I think it runs on 16 9

Yeah I guess I just misremember my old times playing. I've always been on 16:9, so I guess I just forgot this is how it always looked. Weird though, I could have sworn the text vignette/settlement screens used to look different.
