In Phantasy, it matters, but only against magic. For example, lightning spells are very effective against metallic armor. Against steel, once again, only the armor number matters.
As for Floris Evolved, I am 99% sure it does not matter in normal combat, because I'd have heard about it. Still, it is possible that special abilities, which exist in Floris Evolved, check armor type.
Mail is stronger than leather because it gives you more armor, plate for the same reason is stronger than mail.
What you actually wear only matters in a VERY few select mods(as said Phantasy makes lightning more effective against armor, in native expansion you get proficiency penalties for wearing heavier armor).
In native its all about the number.
Good, most of the plate armor looks like crap apart from some of the Vaegir ones, may be from the mod though, the medium tier ones usually look the best.
