I read somewhere that having additional horses in your inventory speeds you up, so I always keep three low-level horses in my inventory. Seems to work.
All Cavalry Troops (like Khergits) speed you up
Extra Horses in the Inventory speed you up
And Pathfinding speeds you up
(I know most were already mentioned, but just a brief summary.)
- Disband some units; Sometimes you may have some units you don't actually need (like bandits), you can put 'em on a garrison or disband them, and you may gain some speed. The same with prisoners.
- Don't have many goods in your inventory; Carrying lots of goodies will make you go slower. You can put horses on your inventory and the effect will be reducted, but don't put too many horses or can end up going even slower than before.
- Increase your Athletics or Riding skills; You can go faster in a horse with a high Riding skill, or faster on foot with a high Athletics skill. If your Athletics skill is 4 and your Riding skill is 3, you will go faster on foot than on a horse in the map.
- Increase your Pathfinding skill; It will make you go faster in the map.
- Have more mounted units than infantry; This can be expensive, but an army with many cavalry units will travel faster than an army with lots of infantry units.
- Have 2 or 3 extra horses in your inventory (I'm not sure if this actually make you go faster).
- Avoid mountains or forests, they will make you go slower.
Mixing some cavalry into your army slightly improves the movement speed. Especially if the ratio is close to 50/50, though above that more cavalry greatly increases movement speed.
As does using a few extra horses in your inventory to offset some of the weight of your inventory if you're carrying a lot of heavy stuff.
You move faster, the enemies move faster, the settlement inventories update faster... in real time. In game time, nothing changes, it's just that you get more units of game time per real second.
Did you actually issue a regular move order before pressing Ctrl+Space? Because that would be sped up as well. If you're not moving then just other parties are, since 0 * Faster = 0.
