No one is as good as them at dishing out the damage, which is why they are the undisputed masters of speed run. On the other hand, they are terrible at enduring any kind of attacks, and without proper micromanagement die in droves.
At low difficulty, Vaegirs and Khergits feel really weak, because other factions' heavy armor units are nigh invulnerable. At full difficulty, Vaegirs are a lot more balanced.
In my current play-through, I just joined, with a total of nine men, to help about 50 mid tier Vaegirs against 60 higher tier Nords. Without my intervention, it wold have been a massacre. With my intervention, it still was, but for the other side:
I had one companion go down, the Vaegirs had one infantry killed and one veteran wounded, and the Nords lost 8 veteran archers, 2 huscarls, 15 warriors, etc... at 149% difficulty.
The video is going on-line very soon, if there is interest, I'll link it.
Yes
The fight he joins starts at 10:19. Fortunately, the sun just rose, so it will be in daylight - one minute past four in the morning.
The fight is barely edited.
It's worth nothing how effective the Nord shields are until my player character makes them unsure which way to face... and then the Vaegir archers and marksmen really fall into their groove.
In a sustained fight they will definitely start getting overwhelmed and will lose health as fast as they dish out damage which can lead to many deaths and knockouts in an endurance match.
In sieges defenses their two-handers are a godsend because of their damage and reach and they can utilize the protection of the castle very well. Their archers on the other hand will seriously diminish the first waves of enemies which are usually their best but are at risk of running out of arrows and thus becoming useless during later waves.
In siege offense however they're likely to be slaughtered due to their lack of shields and how long it'll take them to get the tower going or onto the ladders leaving them vulnerable to range weapons. Their archers might suppress them well enough but that still won't stop the footmen from being unable to properly mass an attack on the enemy as once their inside the castle.
This is actually their one and one glaring problem. The fragile knights I can live with, because I only use cavalry in a shock role, never in a scrum. But being able to put up a solid shield wall in front of my archers is something that I very much miss.
There are at least three ways around this.
1) Use mercenaries. Hirelings from the taverns, sword sisters on hold fire as needed, and of course other factions. The Nord warriors in particular are an awesome choice, being the most cost effective shield infantry in the game. Of course, Nord huscarls and Swadian sergeants are A-OK, but those are costly and take forever to train.
2) Use mid tier Vaegir veterans. Expect them to die and die... but they are cheap, trivial to train, and in the field have the added trick of having horses that they can use to 'build' a wall that stops many horsemen in their tracks. Do it right, and the horsemen get shot and leave their horses to add to the wall. In sieges, Vaegir veterans will save a lot of marksmen... but do not expect them to last all that long. If the marksmen do not manage to suppress the enemy ranged troops, you will need more arrow bait after a siege or two.
3) Use whatever, man. This is a cold way of doing things, but it works. Once you start rolling castles, the dungeons are often full of prisoners. Just recruit those, stick them in a division called "arrow bait" and have them soak the enemy ranged fire. They will die, but the castle will fall, and there will be a fresh batch in the dungeons.
I like using all-cavalry armies for field battles.
Although Nords and high tier Vaegir archers or Rhodok crossbowmen are better for siege defence or siege assaults.
Playing Floris Evolved, I like to use masses of Swadian Kights and Slaver Chiefs(elephant mounts).
The trick to saving the knights on the open battlefield is to distract the enemy, especially the archers.
I like to ride up one flank and have my cavalry deploy within range of their archers.
Once the enemy archers are firing at my cavalry, it's possible to ride right through the enemy archers alone, knocking one down; then the entire enemy army is focused on me; and I ride behind their lines while ordering my cavalry to charge.
This way the enemy army gets a full cavalry charge in their rear :)
Often, my all-cavalry army suffers zero casualties this way.
