You surpassed the requirements for becoming a mercenary and went straight to "Lord-worthy" material. At that point, AFAIK, you'd have to try to get a merc contract with another King. Even then, I think you'd be out of luck. (I've never been able to get a merc contract with a King after having surpassed the Lord requirements. BUT, it's supposed to be possible... /shrugP)
You can't be a mercenary as a King. Unfortunate, I know. :) It'd be nice to be a sort of "Robber Baron."
In PoP, you can, however, end up getting a castle through one of the Knighthood Order questlines and doing so won't make you a "King." That's the only time in a mod I've had a walled fief that wasn't awarded by a King. AFAIK, that special questline that grants you that castle doesn't cause you to create a new kingdom if you're not a Lord in a major faction, giving the possibility to roleplay out a sort of "Mercenary Company" kind of game, I guess. But, actually completing that quest requires a pretty big army of experienced troops.
