No need to look in areas closer to other cities.
Nords - sea raiders - usually along the northernmost coastline, between Rivacheg and its western mountain - contact lord of Rivacheg, sometimes lord of Wercheg
Rhodoks - mountain bandits - usually around the walls of the central "doughnut" valley, or against the mountains surrounding it; occasionally on the north face of those mountains or just west of there - contact lord of Veluca, sometimes lord of Yalen
Vaegirs - tundra/taiga bandits - usually in the hills or forests just NW of Khudan (Shapeste area) - contact lord of Khudan, very rarely lord of Rivacheg
Khergits - steppe bandits - usually on or just beneath the steppes of Tulbuk, Ada Kulun and Bulugur - contact lord of Ichamur or rarely Tulga
Sarranids - desert bandits - often in a thick linear north-south cloud between Mawiti and Mijayet - contact lord of Ahmerrad or occasionally Durquba
The lairs are all sieges so there's no cavalry on either side. You get no reinforcements. From what I can tell, the number of the enemy force scales linearly at about force = your level + 7. Typically waves will come in chunks of 6 or 7 with the strongest warriors first and the weakest last.
General strategy:
1. Refer to guide above - if you haven't taken a lair down in these areas recently then the lord will typically have it first on his list of quests for you. Visit that lord and pick up the quest. Refer to the in-game encyclopedia for this info.
2. Check the usual area for that given lair.
3. Move up your preferred troops to the top of your party list before entering the lair. This will increase the likelihood that they're present when you enter. Usually this will be your companions by default. You may also want to poach any bandits returning to it before you go in just for the sake of farming experience and money. The best troops for the lair will usually be carefully-managed archers or just heavy infantry.
4. If you're a combat character, you can usually take down all these guys with practice, but if you're more of a commander then you'll want to move your units around the perimeter so they can either snipe the enemy or aggro them one-by-one.
Taking down bandits is a very prime way of increasing your renown and money, which all goes into progress toward becoming king.
