For the normal merc-quest you just need to ask lords of factions that are at war, sooner or later you get one.
A gray background means that your relations are at 0 with that faction.
EDIT: Unless it's somehow different in Native. I haven't played Native for quite a while.
No mods...like the text comes up green. Or not the text, but the border thing around the text.
I keep doing that. I feel like in other games that I've tried they try to hire me right away, but in this game I keep asking and no one seems to be interested.
I was reading somewhere that it could be that my renown is too high? That seems kind of dumb though, they should be more eager to hire me then.
No, it's exactly that way in Native. So it has to do with the relations level, not allied or hostile, got it.
We don't need to be a merc too early, just kill some bandits, do some trading to earn money and level up first.
I just kinda gave up on it and decided to become a vassal. I just wanted to do some castle/town fighting.
