Can't get hired as a merc?
In my current game, the Khergit owned villages and towns come up green even though I'm not a vassal or hired as a merc for them. I through neutral factions come up gray?

I've gone to a few different in-war factions and asked for tasks to try and get hired as a merc, but they won't hire me.

I know I'm not currently a merc because I'm not getting paid and I'm not getting merc-type missions.

Maybe the game thinks I'm working for the Khergits even though I'm not? I don't know why they would come up green unless they were an allied faction.

What do you mean with "come up green"? Do you play a modded version?

For the normal merc-quest you just need to ask lords of factions that are at war, sooner or later you get one.

The green (and red, conversely) background indicates player relations with that faction. If you're at negative relations with the faction you're mousing over, the background will be red. If your relations are positive with that faction, it will appear green.

A gray background means that your relations are at 0 with that faction.

EDIT: Unless it's somehow different in Native. I haven't played Native for quite a while.

No mods...like the text comes up green. Or not the text, but the border thing around the text.

I keep doing that. I feel like in other games that I've tried they try to hire me right away, but in this game I keep asking and no one seems to be interested.

I was reading somewhere that it could be that my renown is too high? That seems kind of dumb though, they should be more eager to hire me then.

It could also be that you're just getting unlucky with the lords not offering the merc hire mission.

No, it's exactly that way in Native. So it has to do with the relations level, not allied or hostile, got it.

How high is you renown and honor? Usually we need 200 renown to be a merc.
We don't need to be a merc too early, just kill some bandits, do some trading to earn money and level up first.

my honor is in the negative, i'm basically a bandit, but my renown is over two hundred.

I just kinda gave up on it and decided to become a vassal. I just wanted to do some castle/town fighting.
