reload?

i JUST started and i have this crossbow. i can fire it all of... ONE TIME, and then my character sits there and dies while being unable to reload. am i missing something? i have more bolts.

You have to press attack again to start a reload. Also make sure its bolts and not arrows(sounds stupid I know but to my horror, its happened before).

i tried pressing the attack button again. npothing happened . i pressed X as well. something about weapon mode. and the worrd "bolts" flashed on the screen. also those don't look like arrows, they look like bolts to me.

Make sure you have bolts (For crossbows) or arrows (For bows) equipped, meaning they must be in one of the 4 weapon slots.

1. Make sure that you have a crossbow and bolts in two of your weapon slots. Bolts in your inventory do not help.
2. Make sure that you are either on foot and standing still or on horseback using a crossbow that can be reloaded while mounted.
3. Make sure you are holding the crossbow in your hands.
4. Make sure that you have not switched the crossbow into melee weapon mode.
5. Fire the crossbow, if it is loaded. Keep firing until it is unloaded for sure.
5. Look at the lower right hand corner. If there are no projectiles above your health bar, whatever bolts you have do not fit your crossbow.
6. If there is a picture of a bolt, and a positive number near it, you are good to reload.
7. Click the left mouse button once. Wait until the loading animation is completed before you walk. Taking damage also interrupts the reloading process.

If you are playing a mod, tell us. Some mods like Perisno have different bolts for different sized crossbows. Some mods like Phantasy have crossbows with a melee mode. Some mods like Suvarnabhumi Mahayuth have items that looks like crossbow bolts but are actually explosive rockets for a different weapon. Etc.

i'm using the demo. and am LITERALLY at hte start of the game. like... FIRST enemy they put me in front of at the start

So do you get a picture of the bolts in the lower right hand corner?

If you do, and it does not work, are you sure that your character is immobile? You would not happen to have some non-disabled console controller sending minute 'move' commands?

Or maybe you should pull out you sword/spear/whatever you got, knock the bandit down, and experiment with the crossbow in safer conditions.

Are you in Multiplayer? I've hit some odd bug a few times where I couldn't reload in MP. Seemed to fix itself after exitting and restarting.
Other than that its usually because you're mounted (only light and hunting crossbows can load while mounted) or your on foot & start to move.

Really, best advice I could offer if its not meant to be a single shot or you simply don't have anymore ammo than that one bolt is to stay still for the reload animation. Moving at all will cancel it, as will getting hit by anything.
