If you want to get an idea of how it plays, you could try the Brytenwalda mod. It's by the same guys, just set a bit earlier. If Brytenwalda rubs you the wrong way (weak bows, weak horses, a lot of mud slogging, and shield wall crashing) you will not enjoy Viking Conquest, either.
But if you want to experience large infantry battles, where tactics matter a lot, Viking Conquest is the way to go. It has a decent story, as well, which is rare for Warband.
The review I wrote when it first came out is almost completely worthless now because they fixed up the game so much. I keep it up just for comedic value now.
This is one of the most maintained and updated video games I've ever played. The dev team moderates this forum (or did at one point) and has kept the trouble shooting threads pinned at the top the whole time. It's still active.
It was a glitched-out mess on release but I haven't seen too many problems in recent years. Far less than other games I love to play.
I'm a fan and I definitely think it's worth it at three times the going rate...that makes it a deal!
As an archer type player it's far more challenging and rewarding since most enemies use shields. There is no horse archery or 1-shotting shields with overpowered bows.
The stats and skills make much more sense, agility is worth getting, weapons mastery combines a few things, companion skills contribute more fairly, etc.
Sea combat is pretty good as well.
I don't use mods but it's similar to Brytenwalda. Mod options are just overwhelming.
