Out of money, and keep getting captured
I ran out of money, all my troops are dead and I keep getting captured and dragged around the map. I'm 1 person against 6. 1 person against 18. I keep getting hammered by sea lords and bandits. How do I get enough money to buy recruits. Do I need a successful battle or are there some quests that will pay. I spent all my coin buying cattle for some village who gave me nothing in return.

You should probably start off in rhodok or swadian land until you know what you're doing because the bandits are easier there, for one, but you should be able to outrun any bandit parties on your way over to those lands. For money, there's tournaments and various tasks for lords as well as winning battles.

Try asking the kings for quests. Eventually one of them will ask you to collect taxes from the city he owns. You should get at least 7000 denars from collecting the taxes, and you don't need to give the money to the king right away. You can use it as an interest free loan to recruit new troops and to buy yourself some decent equipment.

You need to buy enterprises in as many towns as you can.

He can't do that if he has no money to start with, though.

Instead of starting as a warrior, be a trader. Travel from city to city and learn who has and who needs what. Buy low, sell high; rinse, repeat. Once you have enough money, invest in a business through the local guild.

You only really need a handful of peasant trash troops. They're only purpose is fodder you can ditch to delay an attacker while you run. Don't even start building an army until you have enough steady income to support them.
you can also get paid working in an army

With a mod that includes freelancer, yes
True. Tbh I had forgotten if that was a vanilla mechanic.

Don't bite more than you can chew. Don't go fighting the sea raider without proper equipment and army.

My question is what level are you? Is this all happening to you at level one or two? If so go to an arena or training area and work yourself up.

I normally just go to the arena in town for a few levels & get good enough to have a decent shot winning a tournament, then race for the nearest tournament (or even better FEAST). 13:1 & 10:1 odds will get you some cash. If you lose, go back in the melee arena and make it back (which also should level you). I also usually skip troops (besides companions) for a while....those peasants just slow you down.

I do the opposite with troops, I get some nord recruits as early as possible because my training skill sucks, so that by the time I need them as huscarl I will have some.

They started out fighting each other, but as soon as I moved on one, they all turned and came for me. Every time I try arena or tournaments it's like that. Even the one where you have a team. Other teams ignore each other, and my team ignores half my orders. Not to mention the consistency of starting me with my lowest skill weapons.

tournaments give you 1.3k, sometimes when i start a new game i'll just travel around the map doing tourneys until i get like 15k, then i'll set up a dyeworks in rivacheg, followed by gathering my companions. the dyeworks from that particular town gives a weekly income of 1k.

also houscarls aren't worth it in the beginning imo, warriors and veterans are very strong already.

as far as getting captured, go around the raiders with your horse. or you could always cheese a dozen of them with a lance by yourself and get some decent starting gear.

Where did you start?

You need to make money.

Make money by training in the arena and then eventually winning tourneys.

Once you've won a couple tourneys and have a couple companions, recruit around 20-40 troops.
maintain your expenses to below 1/4 of your total coin.

This means either travelling to tourneys, becoming a trader, merc work, or joining a kingdom.

lots of other options but these suggestions are just to keep the flow of money started.

Once you've got around 15k saved, I'd HIGHLY recommend starting a business. Dye and silk works usually net the most ,so is recommended but there are some locations that will get you more return if you start a different kind of business. Just go through them and see which one nets the most profit.

cheers
